Every RPG player knows that a good mount is more than just a way to get from point A to point B. Horses have always been part of games, and they are not a means of travel, but they change the way we explore big open worlds, fight enemies, and the overall gaming experience we have.
Whether you’re sprinting through the wilderness of Red Dead Redemption 2 or trying to climb some impossible cliffs in Elden Ring, where your horse defines the laws of nature, having the right mount makes the entire experience much better.
Why These Mounts Matter
As we mentioned earlier, horses not only speed up games, but they also enhance the entire experience.
Let’s get one thing straight from the start. This tier list isn’t just about raw stats and the technical abilities of mounts. It covers some of the best mounts in terms of aesthetics, role in the game, how they enhance the game, and the emotional bond you get with them.
After all, when you look back on the RPGs you’ve played, you might not remember the equipment or upgrade you got, but there is a good chance that you’ll remember your mount. I remember all my World of Warcraft mounts, even though the last time I played that game was five years ago.
So, let’s highlight some of the best equine characters in RPGs.
Torrent – The Spectral Steed of Elden Ring
I don’t think there is a better horse than the Torrent. If we can say that this is a horse. This spectral steed isn’t just any ordinary mount. It’s part of Elden Ring’s DNA. First, we have the spooky aesthetics, where this horse looks like a crossbreed of a bull and a horse with the horns on the head.
On top of that, Torrent lets you double-jump, climb impossible cliffs, and avoid some tense moments in the game where you are running away from an OP boss. We all had our moment where we were stuck with this horse on a rocky terrain, jumping like crazy, trying to get unstuck.
So, in terms of design and gameplay utility, Torrent definitely sets the standard, which is why we give this horse the S-Tier.
The Horse in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
Can you imagine playing Zelda, either Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom, without a horse? Of course not. Link’s horse is a big part of your journey, and it makes the entire experience better.
Now, there are many different horses that you can find in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, but one stands out the most just because of the horse’s appearance. We are talking about the Golden Horse.
This is a beautiful horse and quite rare since it can only be found in a certain location.
Apart from the golden coat that the horse has, it also has 6 ponytails on its mane, making it one of the most beautiful horses in the game.
Shadowmere In Skyrim
Now let’s talk about Elder Scrolls, which is a game where horses are also very important. Shadowmere is one of the most iconic horses in this game just because of its demonic appearance. We are talking about a black horse with glowing red eyes, which makes everything even spookier.
In Skyrim, it almost feels like cheating to use Shadowmere for travel and combat because it can tank damage that would send any other steed galloping into the distance. It’s the kind of mount that doesn’t just carry you but makes you feel invincible, which is why it remains one of the most beloved mounts in RPG history.
The Arabian in Red Dead Redemption 2
On the more grounded side, Red Dead Redemption 2 deserves credit for how it treats horses with realism and heart. The Arabian, in particular, is often considered the crown jewel of the game. It’s not just about speed; it’s about how the animal feels under control, its stamina in long rides, and the bond you form with it over time.
But the Arabian is also a fast horse, which means you can get from point A to point B very quickly. Honestly, the Arabian horse feels like some of the past winners of the Breeders’ Cup. A true stallion that runs like a storm. To check out the Breeders’ Cup winning horses and their times, click here: https://www.twinspires.com/breeders-cup/results/
Rockstar’s attention to detail, horses breathing heavily after sprints, their nervous reactions to gunfire, and even the emotional weight of losing one, makes every mount feel alive. Many players admit that losing their horse hurt more than losing their guns, or even their character’s health bar.
Warhorse Jenda In Kingdom Come: Deliverance
Then there’s Kingdom Come: Deliverance, which goes all-in on realism and stat balancing. Horses here aren’t just vehicles; they’re carefully designed with different strengths and weaknesses. Warhorse Jenda stands out for its reliable mix of speed, stamina, and courage, making it one of the most dependable companions in a dangerous medieval world.
Unlike Torrent or Shadowmere, mounts in this game don’t feel overpowered; they feel earned. Picking the right horse becomes a strategic decision, much like equipping the best armor or perks. That extra depth makes your bond with them even more rewarding.
Obviously, there are plenty more legendary horses like Witcher 3’s Roach, and many others, but we can only include the best of the best. So, what do you think about this list? Did we leave out some incredible horse? Let us know in the comments.
