Dredge: How to Improve Sampling Device

The sampling device is a not-so-efficient rod found in Dredge. Although it can only be used to catch the Abyssal Fish, it unlocks the ability to research the Bottomless Lines.

In this guide, I will guide you on how to improve the sampling device in Dredge.

How to Get the Sampling Device?

The sampling device is the first Abyssal Fishing Rod that is tied to the Collect All Samples Pursuit in Dredge. You are required to uncover the modus operandi of a giant monster that has terrorized the area. This quest consists of different parts and needs a particular fish rod upgrade.

Here is how you can get it:

1. Head toward the SouthWest portion of the map, and you will be able to locate the Research Assistant in the Old Fortress in Stellar Basin.
2. Talk to the Researcher to start the Pursuit. All of the three types of fish she tasks you with, including Aurora Jellyfish, Glowing Octopus, and Firefly Squid, are found at night. There is no particular order to collect them.
3. Collect the Aurora Jellyfish. It can be found at night all over the Stellar Basin. You can only catch the fish by Trawling, not a fishing rod will work here. It is a Coastal Catch, so you have to make sure that the Trawling Net is compatible with Coastal Fishing.
4. Collect the Glowing Octopus. It can be found at Night in the Stellar Basin’s Interior. It appears in the glowing, Shallow Fishing Spots. Usually, it can spotted near the tentacle horror in the middle. Use a rod or crab pot to catch it.
5. Collect the Firefly Squid. Another Nightime Coastal catch, that can be found in the Southwest of Stellar Basin. Use a rod or a trawler net to catch it.
6. Once collected, take all three of them to the Researcher. It is suggested to drop them off the moment you catch them, as they can rot by the time you make it back.
7. Now, go to the Research Outpost in Northeast Stellar Basin.
8. In the Outpost, get the Prototype Parts. Select ‘inspect the equipment on the table’ to get them. Make sure that you have enough space for two squares in your cargo hold.
9. Take the Prototype Parts to the Researcher in the Old Fortress and the pursuit will be completed. You will get the Sampling Device in the process.

How to Improve the Sampling Device?

The Sampling Device has Abyssal Capabilities. But even the Researcher will suggest you upgrade it. To complete the next quest, you must have it upgraded.

To improve the Sampling Device, you can buy the Bottomless Lines to catch Hadal fish. It requires one Research Part for the purchase, and you can unlock it at the Shipwright for $450.

Just keep in mind that you will need four-rod slots on your ship to equip it.
