Glenn to Frog The Evolution of a Hero in Chrono Trigger Frog

Frog is a medieval knight in Chrono Trigger. His true name is Glenn (or Grenn in Japanese sources). He once served as a squire under the leadership of Cyrus, a knight of the Square Table. Glenn shared a deep, yet platonic bond with Queen Lynne. He witnessed Cyrus’s death at the hands of Magus, and soon after, was transformed into an anthropomorphic frog by the dark sorcerer.

Usually chivalrous but burdened by his past, Frog devotes his life to protecting Queen Lynne and swears to avenge Cyrus by killing Magus. He blames himself for his friend’s death, and he struggles to recognize that he’s the true wielder of the Masamune, an ancient sword with offensive capabilities against magic users.

Armed with a sword, Frog learns water-element magic upon meeting Specchio. Much like Marle, he also possesses a couple of healing techniques.

Speech Style: Frog speaks in an archaic and ornate manner, often misusing old English terms. Despite this unique speech pattern, no one else in his time uses it. Before becoming Frog, when he was Glenn, he spoke normally.

DS Remake Adjustments: In the DS remake, Frog’s speech is more conventional, albeit a bit dated.

Links in Chrono Cross: A similar-looking, unrelated character named Glenn appears in Chrono Cross, sharing a technique reminiscent of Crono and Frog’s. Another character, Turnip, faintly mirrors Frog’s appearance from Chrono Trigger.

Appearance

In his anthropomorphic form, Frog stands between 120 to 150 centimeters tall. Despite this, he is incredibly strong, able to wield the Masamune with ease. His amphibious physiology enables him to jump high and move swiftly. Some of his combat techniques involve the use of his long, sticky tongue against foes. Even in his transformed state, Frog continues to wear human clothing, seemingly more out of habit than necessity. Iconically draped in a green cape, Frog also sports white trousers, a belt with a sheath, blue boots, and gloves.

In his human form, known as Glenn, he wears similar clothing: a golden breastplate, a green cape, blue gloves, boots, and white trousers. He’s a tall youth with pointed green hair and a tuft that protrudes at the front. He’s described as quite handsome.

History

Childhood in Guardia

Glenn was born in Guardia, possibly in Truce or Dorino. His best friend was Cyrus, who was his superior for many years. Children in their hometown often teased him for unknown reasons. Glenn never fought back, as emotionally, it pained him to hurt others. Cyrus always said he was too gentle.

Years later, when Glenn was a teenager, Cyrus declared he’d join the real knights of Guardia. He asked Glenn to accompany him, but Glenn felt he wouldn’t make a good knight. Despite Cyrus’s insistence on Glenn’s superior swordsmanship, Glenn explained that he didn’t think he could bear to hurt others.

The Squire

Eventually, Glenn arrived in Guardia to serve as Cyrus’s squire. They embarked on many adventures together, including a battle against the Frog King where they retrieved the Hero Medal. Glenn and Leene became good friends, with the young queen constantly worrying for his safety.

The Battle Against the Mystic King

In 590 AD, Cyrus and Glenn set out to confront the Dark Lord Magus. They climbed the Denadoro Mountains to claim the Masamune from Masa and Mune. Alone, Cyrus managed to defeat the Mystic twins, who, impressed by his skills, handed over the sword.

Soon after, armed with the only weapon that could defeat him, Cyrus confronted Magus. Glenn could only stand back, too frightened to join in. Cyrus attacked Magus but was halted by the sorcerer’s formidable magic, and the Masamune shattered.

Out of spite, Magus cast a final spell, killing Cyrus. Enraged and seeking vengeance, Glenn grabbed the broken hilt. Unperturbed, Magus’s general, Vinnie, remarked that Glenn resembled an angry jumping frog. Heeding his general’s jest, Magus then cast another spell, turning Glenn into an anthropomorphic frog and hurling him off the mountain.

The Battle Against the Mystics

From that moment, Glenn, now calling himself “Frog,” fought against the armies of the Mystic King. Consumed by guilt over his perceived weakness during the battle and blaming himself for Cyrus’s death, he resided in a hidden cavern deep within the Cursed Woods.

The Queen’s Kidnapping

A decade later, Frog learns of Lynne’s kidnapping by the Mystics and sets out to find her. However, he halts his search upon hearing of Marle’s discovery in Mount Truce, mistakenly thinking she’s the queen. Continuing his investigation, he finds the real queen is still in danger at Manolia Cathedral. Discovering it’s a Mystic base, he teams up with Crono and Lucca, and together, they defeat the boss, Yakra, rescuing both the queen and the chancellor, whom Yakra had been impersonating.

Upon their return to Guardia Castle, Frog once again departs, pausing only to marvel at Marle’s uncanny resemblance to the queen. Lynne pleads with him to stay, but he bows respectfully and exits.

The Return of the Hero

Later, the Hero’s Medal ends up in Tata’s possession, falsely identifying him as the new Hero. Once Tata’s lie is exposed, Crono retrieves the medal and returns it to Frog. As soon as the two halves of the sword are reforged, Frog cracks the cliff of the mountain base, allowing passage to Magus’s Castle.

The Battle at the Mystic King’s Palace

At Magus’s Castle, Frog faces off against Magus in a final showdown. In a twist, the party learns that Magus didn’t create Lavos. Instead, Magus planned to summon Lavos to defeat him. Their battle accidentally interferes with the summoning, resulting in Lavos consuming everyone in a time gate.

Confronting Magus

In 12,000 BC, the group discovers Magus disguised as the “Prophet”. Later, a confrontation ensues, giving Frog the choice to kill Magus and revert to being Glenn or to forgive and move forward. His decision greatly impacts the unfolding events.

Side Quests

The Hero’s Tomb

In a heartwarming side-quest, Frog encounters the restless spirit of his old friend, Cyrus. Frog repairs Cyrus’s tombstone, granting his spirit peace and allowing the Masamune to achieve unparalleled power.

Endings

Chrono Trigger features various endings, some of which are influenced by Frog’s decisions, particularly concerning his actions towards Magus. These alternate conclusions shine a light on Frog’s development, both physically and emotionally.

Frog’s story is a testament to the potential that lies within, as he rises from humble beginnings to become a hero.
