Understanding MMORPGs

Before we dive into whether Diablo 4 is an MMORPG or not, let’s define what an MMORPG is. MMO stands for Massive Multiplayer Online, and RPG means Role-Playing Game. Examples of MMORPGs include World of Warcraft or Final Fantasy XIV, where missions and events are completed in groups, depending on the number of players allowed at a time.

Is Diablo 4 an MMORPG?

The short answer is no; Diablo 4 is not an MMORPG. Diablo has always been more of a solo Action RPG game, and Diablo IV is no different. You’ll spend most of your time playing by yourself. Diablo 4 Game Director Luis Barriga has clarified this several times and explained what sets Diablo 4 apart from an MMORPG.

Luis Barriga, former Diablo IV director

According to Barriga, dungeons and key story moments are always private, meaning it’s just the player and their party. When towns turn into social hubs, you might run into a few people there. While on the road, you may occasionally encounter another player. However, your victory, experience, and rewards are not dependent on other players, unlike in an MMORPG. Barriga further clarifies that the closest experience to an MMO would be during large world events, where you may see other players, but you don’t need to interact with them.
