In 2020, Epic Games, the company behind Fortnite, added its own payment system to the game to avoid Apple’s 30% fee on in-app purchases. This led to Fortnite being removed from the App Store. Epic sued Apple, and a recent ruling required Apple to allow apps to use their own payment systems. As a result, Fortnite was able to return to the App Store.
Since its return, Fortnite quickly became the most downloaded free game on the iPhone. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney expressed his excitement on social media, thanking supporters and calling the outcome “priceless” for app developers.
Players can now download Fortnite directly from the App Store and enjoy full access to all game modes. Epic is also offering a 20% reward to players who choose to use its payment system instead of Apple’s.
This development is seen as a significant win for both consumers and developers, as it allows more freedom in how digital purchases are handled on mobile devices.
