GTA 6 Delay Could Slash Billions from 2025 Console Market, Analyst Warns

GTA 6 Delay Could Slash Billions from 2025 Console Market

Last Updated on 27 May, 2025

The delay of Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) to May 26, 2026 has sent shockwaves through the gaming industry and analysts are projecting a $2.7 billion revenue loss in 2025. This postponement is expected to impact console sales, game software revenues, and investor confidence.

Ampere Analysis estimates that the delay will result in a $2.7 billion revenue loss in 2025 and will affect both Playstation 5 and XBOX Series X sales. GTA 6 was anticipated to be the most lucrative entertainment launch of the year. It is expected to generate $3 billion in its first year.

Industry analyst Mat Piscatella notes that the delay removes a significant economic driver for 2025 which will lead to a mid-single-digit percentage decline in total video game industry sales in the U.S.

Console Market Dynamics

With GTA 6’s absence, analysts suggest that Nintendo’s Switch 2 will dominate the 2025 holiday season. Meanwhile, Sony and Microsoft could benefit from reduced competition and will allow their titles like Ghost of Yotei and a potential Xbox handheld to gain more attention.

However, the overall industry outlook remains cautious, as the delay removes a potential economic driver and forces publishers to innovate rather than rely on the buzz surrounding GTA 6.

Stock Market Reactions

Despite the short-term setbacks, analysts maintain a positive outlook on Take-Two Interactive’s long-term prospects. Raymond James has reiterated an “Outperform” rating with a $240 price target, emphasizing that the delay is characteristic of Rockstar Games’ commitment to quality.

Conversely, Electronic Arts (EA) has seen a positive shift. Benchmark raised its stock price target to $160, anticipating that the delay will allow its titles like Battlefield to capture more attention during the critical fourth quarter
