Microsoft bought Activision Blizzard in 2023 for $68.7 billion which made it the biggest video game company deal ever. Even after the deal was made official, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) kept trying to block it.
They filed a legal complaint in December 2022 to stop it from happening. But even after Microsoft completed the purchase in October 2023, the FTC continued fighting the decision.
In December 2023, the FTC filed an appeal to reverse the court’s ruling that allowed the deal. Earlier this month, that appeal was denied by the 9th Circuit Court. Now, the FTC has officially decided to stop pursuing the case.
In a legal notice shared recently, the FTC said that ending the legal fight was the best decision for the public. The case is now closed, and the original complaint has been dismissed.
Microsoft President Brad Smith reacted to the news online. He called the decision a “victory for players” and thanked the FTC for making the announcement.
Since buying Activision Blizzard, Microsoft has allowed some of its games to stay on PlayStation, like Call of Duty. The company has also started putting some Xbox games on other consoles, including the Nintendo Switch.
