Lavos the final boss in Chrono Trigger
Lavos: The Planetary Parasite: the final boss of Squaresoft’s Chrono Trigger, arrived on Earth from space in 65,000,000 B.C. It remained dormant until 1999 A.D. when it emerged, wreaking havoc on the world. Throughout the game, the protagonists uncover Lavos’s existence, vowing to stop its world-ending ambitions.
Lavos’s Impact on the Prehistoric Earth
65 million years ago, Lavos crashed on Earth at Tyranno Lair, the last stronghold of the Reptites – a humanoid dinosaur race at war with humans. This collision triggered an Ice Age, causing the Reptites’ extinction. The Reptites, referring to Lavos as the Red Star, had intended to annihilate humans, deeming them unworthy rulers of Earth. The name “Lavos,” meaning “Big Fire” in the Ioka language, was given by Ayla, a human tribe leader. With Lavos delving into Earth’s core to draw energy, the protagonists aimed to vanquish it, believing it weakened post-impact.
The Rise and Fall of the Magical Kingdom of Zeal
Before 12,000 B.C., humanity tapped into Lavos’s vast power, unlocking magic abilities. This birthed the Magical Kingdom of Zeal, a floating haven for mages. However, those incapable of magic were exiled to the frozen earth below, serving as slaves. Zeal’s inhabitants soon attempted to harness Lavos’s energy directly, leading to catastrophic results. The power surge caused by this endeavor obliterated Zeal, marking the end of magic on Earth.
The Era of Relative Peace: 600 A.D. and Beyond
In 600 A.D., Magus, a feared sorcerer, briefly awakened Lavos to destroy it but met defeat. By 1000 A.D., misconceptions spread, attributing Lavos’s creation to Magus. Occasional earthquakes during this era were attributed to Lavos’s energy absorption activities.
Apocalypse Day: The Wrath of Lavos
By 1999 A.D., after absorbing Earth’s energy, Lavos resurfaced, devastating the planet. Survivors eked out an existence in dilapidated domes, warding off Lavos-induced mutant creatures. Without fertile land for sustenance, people relied on Energy Pods to stay alive. Lavos, nesting on Death Peak, spawned offspring, presumably to infest other planets.
Lavos’s Ultimate Demise
Upon discovering Lavos’s destructive plan, the protagonists committed to eliminating it before 1999. Depending on when players chose to confront Lavos, various endings ensued. Facing Lavos entailed a three-phase battle: tackling its outer shell, fighting its true form (a blend of all Earth’s living DNA), and finally, defeating its core essence. Successfully conquering Lavos concluded the game, showcasing the respective ending.
