When you first encounter Magus, his pale gray skin, contrasting with Janus’ regular human hue, immediately catches your eye. Both characters possess light blue hair, yet Janus sports a shorter version, while Magus flaunts pointed ears. And Magus’ red eyes? Some argue it signifies malevolence. Height also sets them apart. Janus, being a child, stands at the same stature as the game’s imps, whereas Magus towers above as the tallest playable character.

Janus’ attire consists of a lilac shawl and matching boots. Magus, on the other hand, dons a majestic cape, leggings, gloves, boots, and a chestplate – all in varying shades of purple and brown.

Janus’ life took a drastic turn when he was transported to the Middle Ages. Discovered by Vinnie and his Mystics, Janus was initially in danger. But, displaying a magical prowess not usually found in humans, he not only saved himself but also embarked on his path to becoming the mighty “Magus.”

The Driving Motive

Magus’ reasons for declaring war remain ambiguous. Some versions suggest he sought power to defeat Lavos. As his magical abilities flourished, many mistook him for a Mystic, further complicating his identity.

Legendary Battles

Magus’ encounter with Cyrus and his squire, Glenn, remains legendary. Despite wielding the powerful Masamune, Cyrus fell, and Glenn, cursed by Magus, transformed into a humanoid frog.

Showdown at Magus’ Fortress

As Frog reclaims the Masamune, the heroes, convinced Magus birthed Lavos, confront him. A fierce battle ensues, culminating in an unexpected turn of events.

Returning to His Roots

Back in his era, Magus uses his future insights to position himself as a prophet, closely observing Lavos’ rising. As he meets the heroes again, choices made can lead him to ally with them or remain an adversary.

Magus As Boss

Magus appears twice as a boss: first in the Mystic King’s Palace and later at the North Cape.

Mystic King’s Palace

• The battle with Magus consists of two phases.
• In Phase 1, Magus uses a Magical Barrier that changes his elemental weaknesses. Players should use corresponding spells like Fire II, Lightning II, Ice II, or Dark Bomb based on his vulnerability. Frog’s Masamune is crucial as it doesn’t trigger Magus’s barrier shifts.
• In Phase 2, Magus drops his barrier to prepare his powerful Dark Matter spell, requiring the team to deal damage and heal quickly.

North Cape

• After being revealed as The Prophet, Magus awaits the heroes. If they accept his revenge challenge, a battle ensues.
• Weakened from a prior battle with Lavos, Magus’s magic is limited but still potent.
• If Frog is in the party, he can duel Magus alone, making the battle more straightforward.

Choosing not to fight Magus at the North Cape will recruit him into the team.
