Dwarf Fortress Refined Coal Guide – Coal Types, How to get refined coal, coal fuel and coal, Subtypes of fuel and a step-by-step video guide

All units of charcoal or coke, the two fuels required to power high-temperature industries like metalworking and glassworking, are referred to in-game as refined coal, coal fuel, or just coal. At a normal (non-magma) smelter, forge, kiln, or glass furnace, one unit of either of these fuels is necessary for every activity.

Dwarf Fortress Refined Coal Guide – How to get Coal?

Coal can be obtained by creating it using the Wood Furnace, which you must construct with limestone. However, getting the limestone required to build the wood furnace is a difficult undertaking because it can only be discovered by going deeper into the earth.

You will need to utilize one piece of wood to generate coal after you have constructed the Wood Furnace. You can easily gather some by breaking up one of the surface-level stumps because any kind will do.

A Dwarf must also have the Wood Burner Labor Skill active, so keep that in mind. By clicking on a character and choosing the Skills tab on the pop-up window, you can view a unit’s list of skills.

Two Subtypes of fuel

  • Charcoal, from wood: A dwarf with the ability to do wood burning labor turns one wood log into charcoal in a wood furnace. Although they are not necessary, skill levels in the Wood burner skill minimize the amount of time needed for this task.
  • Coke, from bituminous coal or lignite: For all game-related reasons, coke, a form of processed coal, is equivalent to charcoal. It is made by a dwarf with the Furnace Operating labor enabled at a smelter using one unit of fuel. Furnace operator skill levels are not necessary but do cut down on the amount of time needed for this operation.
Bituminous coal can be used to make coke, which yields 3 coke (net gain of 2 fuel), or lignite, which yields 2 coke (net gain of 1 fuel). Since conventional fuel is not used for the operation in magma smelters, the net yield for each is really +1 higher.
