Surviving in The Long Dark, a survival action game developed and published by Hinterland Studios in 2014, can be tricky and sometimes outwardly cruel. That is why getting the Hunting Rifle early in the game will definitely improve your odds of making in through the icy, hellish landscape. This guide will help ensure your utmost survival by letting you know exactly where the location of the most powerful weapon inside the game that will be needed to takedown the infamous Bear : The Hunting Rifle.
Though the game is still active, even in 2024, because of its episodal release of the Wintermute series, many players still have a tough time trekking through the harsh landscape without a suitable weapon. That’s where this guide comes in. I will give you all the known locations of the Hunting Rifle in every location. But be warned, most of the spawn locations do have significantly lower odds than most so be sure to check every location to get all the advantage you will need to survive The Long Dark.
Mystery Lake
Trapper’s Cabin – Venture off towards the cabin and you will see the Hunting Rifle hanging by the wall.
Coastal Highway
Jackrabbit Island House – You will see the Hunting Rifle just leaning behind the cabinet in the master’s bedroom.
Abandoned Lookout – On top of the watchtower, inside just hanging by the wall near the door.
Abandoned Mine – In between the tunnels connecting the Coastal Highway and Pleasant Valley, you will see a passage to your left just before the stairs leading up to the Pleasant Valley exit. You can reach the rifle laid down the ground, just behind the metal grates.
Bridge in North West of Logs – Just beneath the broken down log bridge will be a dead deer and a dead huntsman. Collect the Hunting Rifle there.
Pleasant Valley
Near Burned Ridge Cave – Guaranteed, after crossing a fallen log to traverse the mountain, you will find a dead body with a rifle on the right side, just by the cliff.
Shed near Heartbreak Bridge, After crossing the bridge, there will be a shed to your right, there’s a body sitting down with a metal box and a hunting rifle behind him.
Southwestern Cave – you will easily notice the cave when you see the frozen corpse just by the entrance. Enter the cave and you will find the Hunting Rifle with a box of Ammo to boot.
Three Strikes Farmstead – The Hunting Rifle is located at the broken down shed near the dilapidated outhouse. It will be situated at the crawlspace at the end of the shed.
Rock Formation near Pleasant Valley Farmstead, in the middle of a huge Boulder formation on the North West side of the Farmstead, there is a frozen body huddled with a Hunting Rifle and Ammo.
Timberwolf Mountain
Tail Section of the Crashed Plane – A Hacksaw is required before venturing to this location. The Hunting Rifle will be locked away inside one of the aircraft containers.
Mountain Town
Rocky Refuge – The Hunting Rifle is situated on the North part of Rocky Refuge, hiding behind the huge rock formations.
Hushed River Valley
Hill behind North West Ice Cave – on the North West part of the map, there will be a hill with a huge tree on top. There will be a Hunting Rifle waiting for you.
Near North West Ice Cave – Go up the side of the hill and the rifle and ammo will be there behind a small frozen ridge.
North East, going to the Bear Den – The path leading up towards Bear Den, there will be a frozen man tucked behind the boulder just by the path.
Waterfall Path just above Monolith Ice Cave – The Hunting Rifle, along with a few ammo, is located behind the waterfall
Between Rope Climbs at Pensive Vista, Just North of Moose Overlook – Trek over the ridge above and you will spot the Hunting Rifle on the foot of the mountain side.
Bleak Inlet
Secret Mountain Path – By the side of the Central Mountain, located just east of the big lake, will be a small mysterious path that leads up towards a secluded rock formation. Inside the opening will be the huntsman’s corpse with a Hunting Rifle next to him.
Cannery Worker Residences – Inside the residence will be a Hunting Rifle hanging on top of the fire place.
Broken Railroad
in the Ravine, West side river crossing – Beneath the frozen waterfalls will be a dead body with a Hunting Rifle.
Hunting Lodge Left Bedroom – The Hunting Rifle is leaning just by the left side of the doorway once you go inside the room.
Hunting Lodge Right Bedroom – Location will be situated in the Upstairs bedroom to the left, hiding on top of a broken table by the left side of the room.
Fireplace – The Hunting Rifle is placed on top of the vacant fireplace, hanging on top of its stone façade.
Basement – There is also a Hunting Rifle beneath the floors where the basement is located.
There are also random locations for the Prepper’s Bunker scatted all over the map so there is a chance you will get a Hunting Rifle in one of nine locations all over the map. Hopefully this guide has strengthened your resolve in conquering the frozen tundra so that you can dominate your playthrough more efficiently.
